The Correlation between Listening Achievement and Their Speaking Achievement at English Education Department of Halu Oleo University

Abstract

The objective of this study was to measure and determine whether there is a significant correlation between students’ listening achievement and their speaking achievement of English Education Department at Halu Oleo University. This research used a quantitative method and correlational research design. There were 116 students participated as population of the second-semester academic year 2019/2020. The researcher only took 108 respondents and the student consists of class A and class B that had programmed Basic Listening and Basic Speaking Course. The instrument used the data score of students’ listening and speaking courses. In analyzing data, the researcher used IBM SPSS Statistics 22 program namely descriptive and inferential statistics. The result showed that there is any significant correlation between students’ listening achievement and their speaking achievement of English Language Education Department at Halu Oleo University. The result of the data analysis indicated that the coefficient correlation is .394 which is categorized as low correlation and sig 2-tailed is .002 < 0.05. In addition, the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected instead. In short, students' listening achievement and their speaking achievement has a significant correlation at English Language Education Department of Halu Oleo University with low correlation.
