Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out whether chain story technique has a significant effect on students’ critical thinking in writing at Senior High School 1 Raha. This research used a pre-experiment design with one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of students at class XI MIA1 in Senior High School 1 Raha registered in academic year 2019/2020. The sample was taken using a random sampling technique, and the total number of students was 34. The research instrument was a written test focusing on hortatory exposition text. The researcher collected the data by providing pre-test, treatment by using chain story technique and providing post-test. In analyzing the data, the researcher used SPSS 16.0 version. To examine the hypothesis, the researcher used an independent sample t-test. Based on the result found, it shows that students’ mean score of post-test is 68,94. It increases 25.97 points from the pre-test (42.97). Besides, the value of degree of freedom (df) = 32, t = 17.244, and sig (2 tailed) = 0.000. It means that the probability (sig) value is lower than α (p-value < α, or 0.000 < 0.05). Therefore, chain story technique has a significant effect on increasing students’ critical thinking in writing at XI students’ grade level of Senior High School 1 Raha.
