Language Styles Used by The Characters in The Movie “Maleficent”

Abstract

This research aims to analyze language styles used by dominant characters in the movie Maleficent and the sequel movie. This research is categorized as descriptive qualitative research since it analyzes the data in the form of words. The data were collected from the transcript of the two movies Maleficent which are focused on the analysis of the use of language styles which concerns to Martin Joos theory (1967). The data were analyzed and categorized by using highlighter pen and giving a code in every utterance which contain the language style. As a result, the researcher finds 4 of 5 types which the total data found was 49 that contained language style used by the characters in the movie Maleficent. The number of each style found was 9 data of formal style, 14 data of consultative style, 16 data of casual style, and 10 data of intimate style. Meanwhile, the use of frozen language style is not found in this movie, it is because used in events which have a symbolic and historical nature like in literature, poetry and other texts or chants. However, the characters in the movie Maleficent never utter those things which cause this style to not be found in the movie.
