Students’ Perception of Using Bahasa Indonesia in Teaching Grammar at SMPN 7 Konawe Selatan

Abstract

This study aims to examine the students’ perception of using Bahasa Indonesia in teaching grammar at SMPN 7 Konawe selatan. In conducting this study, the researcher employs a descriptive quantitative design. In order to find out a clear understanding of the subject matter, this study focuses on 30 students of class VIII A at SMPN 7 Konawe Selatan.The data were collected by using a close-ended questionnaire and interview session. The close-ended questionnaire was applied to obtain the data on students’ perceptions. Moreover, an in-depth interview was conducted in the classroom to support the data from a questionnaire. The data of close-ended questionnaire was analyzed with descriptive statistics using the SPSS16.0 version, while the interview was analyzed descriptively. This study shows that 80,00% of students responded positively in the cognitive aspect. It means that the use of Bahasa Indonesia facilitates the students to understand the teacher’s explanation in learning grammar. However, they cannot deny that grammar is not easy to learn. Besides, 81,48% of students responded positively in the affective aspect. In this aspect, students tend to use Bahasa Indonesia in the class because it is their language in daily life. Also, they are comfortable and motivated to learn grammar when the teacher speaks Bahasa Indonesia. In addition, 77,33% of students responded positively to the behaviour aspect. This aspect tells that students are confident in conveying what they know about anything, such as their idea, experience, and answer to learning grammar. Therefore, it can be concluded that the majority of students show their positive perception about the use of Bahasa Indonesia in teaching grammar at SMPN 7 Konawe Selatan.
