Abstract

This research aims to determine paraphrasing techniques used by students of English education at Halu Oleo University. It used a descriptive quantitative research design. Students' paraphrasing papers were analyzed to find out what paraphrasing techniques they used. The researcher used 20 students’ paraphrase papers in the academic writing course as the data sources. The instrument in this research was the indicators of paraphrasing techniques which consisted of ten paraphrasing techniques: use synonyms, change part of speech, change word order, change the grammatical structure, change point of view, Eliminate unnecessary words, change the conjunction and transition words, shorten long sentence and combine short sentence, change active to passive or vice versa, and turn abstract idea to concrete techniques. The data in this study were analyzed by following the descriptive analysis steps). The findings indicated that several students used 9 out of 10 existing paraphrasing techniques. Using synonyms was the most widely used technique, while changing conjunctions and transition words was the most rarely used. Furthermore, it was found that the students combined several techniques at least two techniques for paraphrasing. This research concludes that the English students use various techniques in paraphrasing.
