English Teachers' Strategies in Teaching Speaking at SMP NEGERI 1 Napabalano

This research aims to identify strategies that are most predominantly employed by English teachers in teaching speaking at SMPN 1 Napabalano, to find out what the teacher wants in implementing the strategy, and to find student responses towards the strategies used by the teacher. This research used qualitative research techniques to find the result of this research. In this research, teachers and 7th and 8th-grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Napabalano are the research subjects. The data collection techniques used were observation, interviews, and documentation. In this study, the data were analyzed using Michael Hubermen's theory, namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The findings show that the most predominantly employed by English teachers in teaching speaking at SMPN 1 Napabalano are strategy role play and describing pictures. Through the use of these strategies the teacher always adjusts to the conditions of students, media, and existing facilities. There are several expectations that English teachers want in implementing speaking teaching strategies at SMP Negeri 1 Napabalano, namely hope that all students can have the same confidence in speaking, hope that students' vocabulary can increase, hope that students can have the same readiness to learn, hope students' pronunciation can be clearer, and hope printed books can be added. Finally, student responses to the strategies used by the teacher in teaching speaking, namely the strategy were good, they liked the strategy, the strategy can increase students' vocabulary, the strategy can improve students' English, and the strategy motivates students to study hard.
