Abstract

This research aimed at analyzing the types and sub types of turn taking used and describing the functions of doing turn taking from each participant that occurred on Jimmy Kimmel Live Talk Show YouTube channel during episode 47 of season 20. The data source of this research was video that contained utterances among the guests and Jimmy. This research utilized qualitative research for the research design and library research for the method. The data were analyzed using Brita Stenstrom (1994) theory, Murata and Jefferson. It revealed that there were 123 types of turn taking occured for this episode that consisted of 11 types of hesitant start, 1 type of clean start, 19 types of taking over, 13 types of cooperative interruption, 5 types of intrusive interruption, 3 types of transitional overlap, 7 types of recognitional overlap, 10 of filled pauses, 11 of verbal fillers, 1 of silent pause, 12 of lexical repetitions, 26 types of prompting, and 4 types of appealing. However, the type of progressional overlap, new start and giving up were not found. To know the functions of each turn taking, it based on the context that provided by Haliday and Hasan (1985), namely field, mode and tenor. It showed that functions of doing turn taking from each participants were having difficulty to express his / her word, emphasize his/her word, think for a second about what to say, show readiness for delivering statement, floor-taking, bridge sentence from previous to the next sentence, show agreement, show disagreement, ask for clarification, participating in someone’s utterance, to correct what is being said, give clarification, show urgency, show refusal, gain the needed information from interlocutor and attract the interlocutor to respond to what is said. Additionally, this research also implied to the teaching and learning process in making the students become active participants, knowing some dialects in English and improving their discourse analysis understanding.
