Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the Frayer Model effect on students’ vocabulary achievement in the tenth-grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Pasarwajo. This research used a pre-experimental design. The population was 84 tenth-grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Pasarwajo in the academic year 2018/2019 (second semester). Then, the sample was 21 students of X MIA (Matematika dan Ilmu Alam) I with purposive sampling as a technique. The instrument of this research was a vocabulary test, totalling 20 items of multiple choice. The researcher used SPSS 16.0 to analyze the data. Based on the analysis using SPSS 16.0 version, the mean of the post test was higher than the pre test. It could be seen that the mean score of the post-test was 79.52, and the mean score of the pre test was 44.76, with a significant gain of 34.76 points. The hypothesis test results showed that a significant (2-tailed) value after analysis by paired sample t-test was 0.00 smaller than the significant α = 0.05 ( 0.00 < 0.05). The researcher compared the t-test value with the t-table in order to determine the hypothesis. Based on the analysis, the t-test was bigger than t-table (17.16 >2.093 ). The researcher also analyzed the effect size of the Frayer Model by using Cohen’s criteria. The effect size result was 2.37 and counted in the large category because ES = 2.37 > 0.8. This could be concluded that H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected, which meant that there was a significant effect of the Frayer Model on students’ vocabulary achievement at tenth-grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Pasarwajo.
